Peter Bruchas was born in March of 1945, and he died Nov. 14, 2006.
Mr. Bruchas attended most of his grade school years on Vashon and graduated from Vashon High School in 1964. He then attended Saint Martin’s College.
He joined the Navy and qualified for Navy Fighter Pilot School; however, he became a carrier squadron weatherman.
Following his time in the Navy, Mr. Bruchas travelled extensively in Mexico and South America, taking photographs and doing Peace Corps work delivering supplies for remote schools in the jungles of Belize through Costa Rica.
His love of mechanics, especially related to French and German automobiles, led him to being a “go to” guy for cars of that type. He was also a commercial fisherman. His one true enjoyment, however, came from playing jazz saxophone in big swing bands. He was instrumental in raising the interest in playing the sax among other young people. He played with the Portage Philharmonic Orchestra and the popular Seattle jazz band Roadside Attraction in Tula’s Restaurant and in Belltown.
Mr. Bruchas was also one of the first members of the Island Skindivers and Karate Club. He was a longtime member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and a frequent volunteer cook for charity fundraisers.
Survivors include his sister Peggy Mincks and nephew Tobias Mincks.
Friends will miss his great kindness and generosity, subtle rapid-fire humor and wit.
Cremation will be handled by Island Funeral Service. A celebration of life will be held at the Eagles at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 10. Donations may be made to the Vashon High School band.
