Nan Elizabeth McGehee, born March 9, 1928 to Winston and Ethel McGehee in Chicago, Illinois, died January 25, 2012 at her home on Vashon Island, Washington.
She is survived by her niece Nan E. Wilson (Epifanio), nephews Paul T. Wilson (Michelle), Nathaniel J. Wilson, Jr. (Mardi), David N. Wilson (Sheila), brother-in-law Nathaniel Wilson (Yvonne), grand-nephews Davis Wilson and Raphael Torres, grand-nieces Alyssa Brooks (Eugene), Jessica Wilson and Julie Wilson, great grand-nieces Jaida, Peyton and Kolbi. She was preceded in death by her sister and only sibling Yolande.
Nan was passionate about mentoring and inspiring youth both in Chicago and on Vashon, where she moved after retiring from a life long career in education. She attained two baccalaureate degrees, a masters and PhD and was pivotal in the development of Vashon Youth and Family Services for numerous years. For many years she was an active member of the Chicago Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and was a lightning rod for women’s issues in and out of the workplace.
After moving to Vashon 32 years ago Nan ensconced herself into the local community learning to golf. Her love for youth and animals can be remembered with a contribution to VYFS or VIPP. A memorial service is planned for March 10th on Vashon.
