Maureen Redfield died unexpectedly Feb. 23, 2004, at her beloved home on Manzanita Beach, Maury Island. She was 71 years old.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, she attended Seton Academy in Vancouver, Holy Names and Forest Ridge Academies in Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington in Journalism.
While at the UW, she met and fell in love with Bartlett Redfield. They were married in Japan while Bart was serving in the US Air Force. Maureen was married to and dearly loved Bart for 49 years.
The two moved to Vashon year-round in 1983 after summering on the Island all their married life. She was involved with the Garden Club, the Democratic Party and the Dockton Water Association among other interests.
Maureen loved being outdoors and thoroughly enjoyed day hikes with Bart and “the girls” (their dogs) and/or friends. She was a lover of literature and words and enjoyed going with friends to the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. She always had projects going: sewing, cooking all types of cuisine, and “grubbing” in Vashon’s native clay to create beautiful gardens.
She received considerable pleasure from caring for those she loved.
Friends and family say Mrs. Redfield was a nurturer, compassionate, open-minded, intelligent, wise and warm.
Survivors include her husband, Bart, of Vashon; her son Michael and daughter-in-law Nancy of Seattle; daughter Shaela Hull and son-in-law Tom of Seattle; son Matthew of Seattle; grandchildren Noah, Asa, Aleah and Seth Redfield, and Dan, Olivia and Malcolm Hull; step brothers Ronald Welsh of Sitka, Alaska, and Daynard Welsh of Langley, BC.
A memorial to celebrate her life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Vashon United Methodist Church, 17928 Vashon Highway S.W.
Remembrances may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, 12721 30th NE, Seattle, Wash. 98125.
