Kaltryn S. Flynn Griffith

Kaltryn S. Flynn Griffith of Vashon Island died June 11, 2005, of complications from her long fought battle with Lupus and Behcets Syndrome. She was 51 years old.

Friends and family say she will be remembered by many for her unstinting involvement in PTA and as a driver and director for the Island’s access vans. She founded and worked Off Center Farms Nursery which supplied perennials and holiday wreaths, along with practical gardening advice.

She also was an accomplished artist who donated works to the Vashon Allied Arts Art Auction.

She was born July 30, 1953.

Brought up in the town of Pelham Manor, Westchester County, N.Y., she moved with her family to Houston, Texas, in 1971. During the early 70s she earned a bachelor of the fine arts degree from California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland.

While in Oakland she met Max. They were married in the Adirondacks in August of 1976 and she returned often to the family camp there.

Kaltryn and Max started their family while restoring their Victorian home in East Oakland. With children and dogs in tow they relocated to Vashon in the summer of 1984, where remodel, restoration and gardens continue today.

Survivors include her parents Mr. Lawrence and Mrs. Henriette Flynn of Austin, Texas, her siblings; Mary Laurence Flynn, Elisabeth Flynn Glass, L. Patrick Flynn Jr., Beatrix S. Flynn; her children Schuyler M. Griffith, Mallory L. Griffith and her husband Maxwell L. Griffith III.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 25, at the Vashon Lutheran Church followed by an open reception at her home.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Kaltryn Griffith memorial fund set up at Washington Mutual Bank Vashon, in order to further research on the effective treatment for connective tissue diseases.
