Joanne Covert
Joanne Elizabeth (Brubaker) Covert, 79, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend and confidant, passed away March 22, 2011 in her home in Edgewood. She is survived by her devoted husband, Zola Proffitt, her brother Jim Brubaker, her daughters Sara Schemmel and Kathleen Covert Jensen, her son John Covert, as well as seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-three years, Robert Covert.
Joanne was born March 23, 1931 in Evanston, Illinois. She lived in Illinois for her first 47 years and then lived on Vashon for 27 years. Her main occupation was bookkeeper. She held several jobs including Island Insurance Center.
Joanne never met a stranger, and lovingly cared for her family and anyone else who walked through her door. She made Zola’s family her own as well. Grandma, you will be remembered for baking cookies and special desserts, smothering kisses, sitting on your lap, decorating Christmas trees, beating us at scrabble, and always being there for us. Mom, you will be remembered for being a true friend and confidant. Joanne, you were a true love until the end. You wil be remembered the most for teaching us respect, honesty, integrity and most of all, love. You are the the purest example of the celebration of life, our true inspiration in faith and love. We miss you.
Suffering from Alzheimers Disease, Joanne held her grace and kept her sense of humor intact until the end. One of her final, loving gifts was to participate in a clinical drug trial, hoping that by doing this she might be able to spare others the ravages of this disease.
