Jean Caton Wubbold Bradley, mother of Capt. Joseph H. Wubbold USCG (Ret.) of Vashon Island, Jean Day Conte, R.N., of Virginia and Margaret Elizabeth McDonald of Vermont, died peacefully in the morning watch of Jan. 9. She would have been 95 on her next birthday in February.
Born in Alexandria, Va., Bradley was the youngest of three daughters of Dr. William P. Caton and Daisy Beadle Caton.
She grew up in Virginia, and lived most of her life in the Northern counties of the Commonwealth. However, in her long and eventful life, she had many adventures in other parts of the world. She travelled extensively, the last journey being a safari in Kenya at the age of 78.
She lived the last five years of her life on Vashon, most of that time at Aspiri Gardens, Vashon Community Care Center. She was one of the first residents of the new complex, and loved the place, especially the wonderful people who took care of her there.
Bradley was for many years a librarian in the Arlington County, Va. library system. She was a true believer in the need for literacy for all and translated that belief into deeds. She taught English to non-English speakers and for this was honored by the Commonwealth of Virginia for her successes.
Besides her three children, Jean had 15 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
She lived long enough to see a photograph of Dominic and proclaimed him to be a handsome lad. She was both a blessing and a challenge to her large family, and to numerous friends and colleagues.
A memorial gathering will be held at Vashon Community Care Center at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Family members reported that the gathering is for Bradley, through her family, to express appreciation for all the kindnesses shown her by the center and the people there.
