Dale Hinkson

H. Dale Hinkson died on Tuesday afternoon, September 21, 2010, at his home in Burien, Washington. He was 72 years of age, a man devoted to his family, friends, work, life long learning and travel. Dale was born in Boise, Idaho in 1938 to Helen Elizabeth Tueth and Harold Irving Hinkson. Dale spent his early years in the Boise area before moving with his family to Burien. The family bought a new “war box” home on S.128th Street and his father operated a gas station near Boeing Plant #1. Dale’s father, Harold, died unexpectedly when Dale was ten years old, but Dale and his mother stayed in Burien and Dale attended local public schools before beginning his own work and family life. Dale started work as a stock boy for Pay N Save in downtown Seattle and in Bellingham. He owned a drug store in Mt. Vernon for a short time and invested in a towing business with his cousin, Steve Davis. He became manager of Photo Lab’s printing plant in Seattle and was the supervisor of Boeing’s Photo Lab in Renton in the early 1980s. He began a new career as a financial consultant and stock broker with Freeman Wellwood, a discount brokerage house, based in Seattle. He opened their offices in Tacoma, Portland and then Honolulu, Hawaii, where he lived for two years. In 1990, he went to work for Merrill Lynch as a stock broker and retired from Merrill in 1997. He then started his own asset and portfolio consulting firm, Hinkson Leahy Associates.

During his retirement years, Dale and his wife Kathleen Leahy spent time enjoying the company of his four children and his four grandsons. They also traveled extensively spending many winters in San Patricio/Melaque, Mexico and touring cities and sites in Japan, Brazil, Italy, France and the Cook Islands. One of their more famous adventures was a three day trek climbing up to Machu Picchu in Peru at ages 63 and 67. Dale was also a volunteer for seven plus years with Providence Hospital’s Hospice program. Dale is survived by the “love of his life” his wife of twenty-seven years, Kathleen Fortin Leahy, his children Kellis Marie Borek (Jeff), Elizabeth Ann Hinkson, Dale Patrick Hinkson (Jenell) and Paul Harold Hinkson (Heidi), his grandsons, Anthony Hinkson, Jackson Borek, Sean Hinkson, Andy Hinkson and a large community of friends. The family is requesting that memorials in Dale’s name be sent to Compassion and Choices, P.O. Box 101810, Denver, Colorado 80250. There will be a celebration of Dale’s life on Sunday, October 24, 2010, at Camp Burton on Vashon Island (www.campburton.com) from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
