Charles “Chuck” Wilson Barrentine died Aug. 7, 2005, at his home on Vashon Island. He was 71 years old.
Mr. Barrentine was born March 22, 1934, in Tampa, Fla.
He was a graduate of Vashon High School. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1952 and married his high school sweetheart, Mary Jo McCormick, in 1953. After 20 years of touring the country, he retired and returned to Vashon to buy Vashon Hardware Co. from his father-in-law, George McCormick. He operated the store for 12 years and then sold it to his oldest son, who ran it for 18 more years.
Mr. Barrentine originated the sign that hangs in front of the store “Today’s Special, So is Tomorrow.”
During his Coast Guard years he was a journalist and photographer. He was a Boy Scout leader as well.
During his time on Vashon, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club, a volunteer at the Vashon Community Food Bank, the Vashon Senior Center, Granny’s Attic and he was a docent at the Vashon Heritage Museum and past president of the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association. He also assisted various housebound elderly on Vashon.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, sons Gary Barrentine in Belize, Rick Barrentine in Mill Creek and Tim Barrentine and his wife Barbara in Kent.
