Arthur H. Gorham died Aug. 8, 2005, at Ridgemont Terrace Nursing Facility in Port Orchard. He was 88 years old.
Mr. Gorham was born July 25, 1917, in Florence, Mass. and grew up in Elmhurst, Long Island. He graduated from Newtown High School.
It was in New York where he met and married Emily Kochis in 1940. She died in 1979.
He worked for CBS radio at the New York affiliate as an actor.
During World War II, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the Third Division in the South Pacific on Guam. After the war, the family moved to Vashon Island in 1946, first living in Burton where his two younger daughters were born. Then the family moved to Quartermaster Harbor where he lived until shortly before his death. For a while he and Emily lived in Hawaii.
Shortly before World War II, they moved to Seattle where he worked for the Biddle Company as a buyer. After World War II, he worked as a salesman for several companies over the years.
Mr. Gorham was a past master in the Masons as well as a former president of the Sportsmen’s Club, a reserve officer for the King County Sheriff, and a former president of the Volunteer Fireman’s Association.
He also was active in local theater groups. He enjoyed working in his yard and traveling. He and Emily circumnavigated the world in their travels. He was one of the first Americans to visit The People’s Republic of China.
Survivors include his wife Margaret McKinstry, three daughters, Barbara Johnson (Roger) of Issaquah, Judith Snow (Dale) of Spanaway, and Patricia Gorham of Gig Harbor; step daughters: Alison Seamans (Jack Hanson) of Port Orchard, and Elizabeth Seamans (David Ofelt) of Los Gatos, Calif.; three grandchildren, Lt. Steven Johnson, Michelle Johnson, and Andrew Snow; one great-grandson, Jeffrey Johnson; and many “adopted” daughters who were close friends.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at the Masonic Temple (second floor) in Burton with a military burial service directly following at the Vashon Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
