Alexander Tidball

Alexander Berthoud Tidball, 92, son of Lewis Cass and Elsie Hoyle, passed away June 17 in Bellingham.

Born in Bellingham in 1917, he graduated from Deerfield Academy in 1936 and the University of Washington in 1940. He also attended the University of Montana and was a Sigma Chi. World War II interrupted his graduate work at Harvard and he separated from the U.S. Army as a Major.

Alex spent many of his childhood summers at his aunt and uncle’s home on Quartermaster Harbor. He moved his own family to the Island in 1963.

Alex married Jane Landsell in 1950 and their family includes Mark Hoyle and his wife Linda, and daughter Leslie Ann.

After a career in designing and selling men’s clothing, including working for Sportscaster and the Bon Marche, he and Jane founded Acorn Street Yarn Shop in 1979.

Alex embraced the children of his brother and sister and was honored by their love: They are Stephen and Carol Banks and their children and grandchildren, Allen and Marrion Banks and their children, Sarah and Malcolm Harker; and the East Coast Tidballs who are Ben and Frannie and their children, Tony and Sallie and their children, Lewis Cass‚ “Thumper” and Kathy, Mary Kelly and her children and grandchildren, Tom and Buffy and their children and grandchildren and Peter and Mary and their children.

Alex was preceded in death by his brother, Lewis Cass‚ “Bill” and sister Louise, and nephews Ben and Thumper.
