Islanders with children are invited to get a voucher for a wearable light to help them be visible in the dark.
The vouchers are available at Youth & Family Services, the Vashon Library and the food bank. Islanders can also stop into Spider’s Ski and Sports and ask for a light.
Islander Wendy Wharton launched this project, called Lights for Tykes, in 2014 to help make sure that island children and youth would be safer in the dark months of the year.
Vashon residents have contributed about $2,000 to the effort.
“We drivers want all kids on Vashon to be visible as they are walking to and from school, waiting for the bus, walking home after soccer, lacrosse, or any of the other after-school activities,” she said.
McMurray leads the effort with 14 lights picked up and a total of 35 out there on the streets.
“Please wear them,” Wharton said.
