Five members of Vashon’s Teen Council, along with facilitators Kyle Britz and Tracy McLaren, traveled to Olympia last Monday, Jan. 16, as representatives of Planned Parenthood’s Teen Council program to talk to legislators during Teen Lobby Day at the Capitol.
The council, facilitated and supported on the island by the DoVE Project, is comprised of high school-age student volunteers who are trained to educate their peers in the areas of sexual health and relationships through the Planned Parenthood Teen Council curriculum.
Each member of the Vashon contingent spoke directly to 34th-district legislators Sen. Sharon Nelson (D-Vashon) and Reps. Joe Fitzgibbon and Eileen Cody about issues that were important to them, such as the Affordable Care Act, paid family leave and birth control/family planning.
