The Washington State Redistricting Commission issued its final maps for a new 10th congressional district last week, leaving Vashon in the 34th Legislative District and the 7th Congressional District, a seat held by Rep. Jim McDermott.
Earlier maps had placed Vashon in the 4th Congressional District, currently held by U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks (D-Bremerton). The 34th Legislative District was also reshaped in earlier iterations — a plan that would have forced state Rep. Joe Fitzgibbons (D-Burien) to run against another Democratic incumbent.
But the final version, approved in the final hours of the commission’s Dec. 31 deadline, left Vashon’s congressional and legislative boundaries intact.
Sen. Sharon Nelson (D-Maury Island) said she’s pleased with the way the redistricting process turned out, noting that Vashon is more connected to Seattle than the Kitsap Peninsula.
“We have a strong relationship with Congressman McDermott,” she added.’
