A Vashon man charged with raping two girls on two separate occasions has been charged with a third crime — the attempted rape of a girl at her home on Vashon in 2006, a high-profile incident that raised alarm throughout the community.

Brian Dublin, 28, a 2000 graduate of Vashon High School, has been in jail on $750,000 bail for over a year awaiting trial for the rape of a 16-year-old girl in January 2010. Since his arrest, King County prosecutors have charged him with additional crimes. All told, he now faces six felony counts: two counts of first-degree rape, one count of attempted first-degree rape and three counts of first-degree burglary.

If convicted, Dublin could face life imprisonment. His trial is scheduled to begin next week but will likely be postponed for another week or so, prosecutors said.

In all three of the incidents, according to charging papers, Dublin allegedly entered the girls’ homes at night and raped or attempted to rape them while family members were asleep in separate bedrooms.

The first incident took place in October 2003, when he allegedly crept into a home near the Vashon Island Golf & Country Club and raped an 18-year-old. As he left her house, according to court documents, he told her he didn’t want to read about the account in The Beachcomber — then said “sweet dreams” before slipping away.

The second incident took place in July 2006, when Dublin again allegedly entered a home at night — this one on the Westside Highway near the Transfer Station — and attempted to rape a 13-year-old girl; she managed to escape. At the time of the incident, Sgt. John Urquhart, spokesman for the King County Sheriff’s Office, told The Beachcomber police had reason to believe the culprit “watched the residence from a wooded area on their property. It is possible the suspect had watched the house on other days prior to the incident.”

The incident garnered considerable attention on Vashon, in part because the sheriff’s office released a composite sketch of the girl’s attacker, which The Beachcomber played on the front page.

In the most recent incident, Dublin allegedly snuck into a home on S.W. 204th Street late at night and raped a 16-year-old girl, threatening to kill her if she told anyone, according to the sheriff’s office and the girl’s parents. As soon as the man left, the girl ran into her parents’ room and told them what had happened, charging papers said.

The girl told detectives she thought her attacker was Dublin, whom she had seen at a party earlier that night and who sometimes sent her strange text messages, according to charging papers.

The girl’s father, reached Friday evening, said the family is moving forward with their lives and working to put the incident behind them.

“Actually we’re doing pretty well,” he said. “For the most part, we’ve put it behind us, and we’re just looking forward to the trial being behind us, so we can truly move on with our lives.”
