A janitor at the Vashon Library has been charged with sexual assault after allegedly groping another man at the library earlier this month.

Joaquin Amaya, 68, admitted to police that on April 5 he lured a mentally disabled man into the Vashon Library and touched him on his genitals through his pants, according to charging papers filed last week in King County Superior Court.

Prosecutors say the incident occurred when the library was closed and Amaya — a Vashon resident who worked for a maintenance company that contracts with the library — was at the building cleaning alone. According to charging papers, Amaya lured the victim into a closet in the library. The victim quickly left the building after being touched and later reported the incident to a family member, who reported it to police.

Joaquin was charged with fourth degree sexual assault as well as attempted unlawful imprisonment and remains in jail on $50,000 bail. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, May 2.
