John Browne, a celebrated Island musician who was seriously injured in an accident during November’s fierce snowstorm, is slated to leave Tacoma General Hospital for a convalescent center Wednesday.

The move — first out of intensive care and now out of the hospital — signals his strong recovery. Vicki Browne, his wife, said she’s hopeful, even though he’s still weak and concerns about the impact of the accident on his heart linger.

“Every day, he gets a little stronger and a little bit more himself,” she said.

There’s been an outpouring of Island support for the musician and nurseryman since his accident on Nov. 22. He was attempting to remove a tree that had fallen across a road when a car hit the tree, which in turn hit his chainsaw, catapulting him several feet into the air.

An account has been set up in his name at U.S. Bank, a fundraising concert is in the works and collections have been taking place all over the Island.

“It’s really amazing,” Vicki said of the support.
