Vashon Household seeks information about islanders’ housing needs

Vashon HouseHold, a nonprofit agency dedicated to affordable housing on Vashon, is conducting a survey of residents in an attempt to assess the island’s most pressing housing needs, the organization announced this week.

The survey contains nine questions asking respondents about their personal housing situation. The tenth question asks respondents to list the housing options they’d like to see on Vashon.

The survey is online at SurveyMonkey (surveymonkey.com/r/GMBQXNY) and may also be accessed via Vashon HouseHold’s website, vashonhousehold.org. It is also available in hard copy — in both English and Spanish — from the Vashon HouseHold offices. The questionnaire is open to all islanders, including those who are struggling to find affordable housing and those who are not.

“We want to get a better sense of the housing needs on Vashon. We also want to hear people’s ideas,” said Chris Szala, executive director of Vashon HouseHold. “This survey does both. It helps us to understand the situation facing islanders who struggle to find housing. And it mines the entire community for ideas and suggestions.”

Vashon HouseHold has already surveyed more than 100 people with the questionnaire. Board members have taken it to Thriftway, IGA, Sawbones, Ace Hardware and the Vashon Island School District, where employees have been given the opportunity to complete it.

The organization is currently developing Sunflower, a home-ownership project on Bank Road that is expected to be completed next year. Survey results will help Vashon HouseHold determine its next project.

“We’re starting to think hard about what we should take on once Sunflower is completed,” said Board President Beverly Miller. “The responses to this survey will help to inform our discussions.”

The survey will remain on the website until the end of August.
