A group of classic yachts is making its way to Vashon this weekend at the invitation of the Quartermaster Yacht Club. 

At least seven of the ships will be docked at the club and open to the public, said Jerry Crosby, a member of the yacht club.

“Boarding will be encouraged,” Crosby said.

To be classified as a classic yacht, a vessel must have been launched prior to Dec. 31, 1942, and be a “power-driven pleasure boat of good design, construction and maintenance,” according to the rules of the Classic Yacht Club Association. 

All the classic yachts coming are part of the Northwest Classic Yacht Association. They are all painstakingly maintained, Crosby noted, nicely varnished and many with lace at the windows.

Some of the expected boats include Crosby’s Mardo, pictured above, a 58-foot 1929 Garbutt & Walsh; a 33-foot 1927 Rathfon and a 34-foot 1948 Richardson.

It will be a friendly gathering, Crosby said.

“What they have in common is their love for old wood boats. They love the fellowship of old wood boat people,” he said.

The mini boat show will be from noon to 4 p.m. Satruday, July 9, at the Quartermaster Yacht Club. Parking will be available in the club lot on the west side of the highway, north of the Burton post office.
