Farmers market
The market will be open at the Village Green from 2 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6. (Note the extended hours until 6 p.m.) Island farmers will be selling sweet and hot peppers, potatoes, basil, eggplant, carrots, broccoli, cut flowers, cottage bouquets, dahlias, gourmet salad mix, micro-greens for salads, cucumbers, kohlrabi, raspberries and more. Artist Anne Gordon will sell her scenes of Vashon Island as postcards and prints.
Vashon Park District’s Tunes @ Noon will present Ken Jacobsen, playing classical jazz guitar and cello, from noon to 1:30 p.m., followed by Ron Hook, lead guitarist for Sub Pop, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Books and DVDs from the Farmers Market Food for Thought Library will be available for checkout. Free legal clinic
The King County Bar Association’s monthly free legal clinic will be held Thursday, Aug. 7 at the Vashon Senior Center.
Anyone with a legal question or issue is welcome to sign up for a 30- minute appointment with a volunteer attorney.
Please call 267-7070 Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon to make an appointment, which will be between 6 and 8 p.m.
DSHS to visit
A representative from the state Department of Social and Health Services will be at Vashon Youth & Family Services from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 7.
Overeaters Anon
A new meeting of Overeaters Anonymous, a recovery program for compulsive overeaters based on the 12 steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, is forming on the Island. The meetings will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings at the Vashon Presbyterian Church in the Belfry room upstairs. Meetings are free, and all are welcome. The first meeting takes place on Thursday, Aug. 7. For more information call 463-1631.

Back-to-school sale
A rummage sale — with half of the proceeds going towards the Vashon PTSA-sponsored back-to-school drive — will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, in the Vashon Theatre parking lot. Islanders who want to participate as sellers are asked to arrive by 8:30 a.m. to set up a stall.
The drive, now in its sixth year, provides a range of supplies — from backpacks to calculators — to families in need. This year’s distribution will take place at the Vashon Maury Community Food Back on Aug. 27.
Bins have been set up around town for those who want to donate supplies. Or send checks to Bob and Lauri Hennessey, Vashon PTSA Back-to-School Drive, P.O. Box 2364, Vashon, WA 98070.

The Farmers Market will be in full force from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Village Green. Island farmers will be selling tomatoes, sweet and hot peppers, potatoes, basil, eggplant, carrots, broccoli, wine, meats, cheese, eggs, cut flowers, blueberries, raspberries and more. Tiny’s Organic will sell fruits from Eastern Washington. A wide variety of Island crafts will be available, and the Monkey Tree will be selling fresh hot bread, croissants, soups and iced teas. At 10:30 a.m. Jenni Wilke of Books by the Way will read stories for children. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dan Brown and friends will provide lively music.

Master gardeners
The master gardeners clinic will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9, outside of True Value. Master gardeners will be available to help answer gardening questions, including ideas on natural lawn care. Stop by for gardening advice, plant disease identification, available resource material and more.

Salmon derby
The Frank Matsumoto Memorial Salmon Derby, sponsored by the Vashon Sportsmen’s Club, will take place from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at Jensen Point in Burton. Cash prizes and kids’ prizes will awarded after the 1 p.m. closing time.
A $10 entry fee is required. Note: Get your salmon punch cards prior to fishing. Sign up at Vashon True Value or Island Lumber.

The lives of bugs
“Buzz, Smack, Splat — the Dangerous Lives of Bugs” will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 10, at the Vashon Library. All ages are welcome.
In a world of bug zappers, fly swatters, roach motels, Deep Woods Off and heavy books, it’s not easy being a tiny bug. Spiders, roaches, fireflies and ants tell their slapstick stories through The Noiseguy.
Registration is not required. The program will be held in the Ober Park performance room next door to the library. Call the library for more information at 463-2069.

‘Virginia V’ cruise
Tickets are available for the Sunday, Aug. 17, cruise aboard the steamer “Virginia V,” sponsored by the Vashon Maury Island Heritage Association.
The around-the-Islands cruise on a National Historic Landmark vessel will depart from Vashon’s north-end passenger ferry dock at 1 p.m. and return around 5:30 p.m.
Tickets are $60 for Heritage Association members and $75 for non-members.
To purchase tickets, stop by the Island Heritage Museum at 10105 S.W. Bank Rd. on Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are also available at Books by the Way or by contacting Barbara Steen at 463-9355 or Vashonsteen@aol.com.

Friday lunch
The Vashon Senior Center on Bank Road has changed to “lighter fare Fridays,” offering salad and a sandwich for $3.50, starting at 11:45 a.m. Lunches will be prepared by volunteer guest chefs JoAnn Nielsen and Ellen Trout through the end of August. Lighter fare Fridays are open to everyone in the community.
