Ten Islanders — several of them new to Vashon politics — have filed to run for one of the nine seats on the Vashon-Maury Island Community Council board of directors.

The 10 candidates vying for nine spots means the community council will hold an election, said Roger Fulton, who chairs the council’s election committee. He plans to get 6,500 ballots printed and mailed out to Islanders by Oct. 21.

The mail-in ballots will have to be postmarked by Nov. 2, Fulton said. Online, web-based voting will be available as an alternative to the paper ballot and will be strongly encouraged, since it will significantly reduce the work of volunteers tabulating ballots, he added.

The candidates were re-cruited by the three-member community council nom-

inating committee. John Staczek, who chaired the nominating committee, said he was pleased they were able to find 11 viable candidates.

“We worked pretty hard. We worked the phones. We worked the street,” said Staczek, who worked on the committee with Gay Rosser and Ron Irvine.

“It was important for us to find people who were were interested and willing,” Staczek added

A new slate of candidates was needed after the current board members stepped down en masse in the wake of a King County legal opinion that the board has to comply with the far-reaching Public Disclosure Act.

Only one board member — Hilary Emmer — remained on the nine-member panel. She is currently serving alone on the board.
