Vashon’s Artisan Electric will host its annual solar tour this weekend, making it possible for islanders to see a variety of solar arrays.

Five homes will be on the tour, as well as what organizers call a “legacy home,” a home with a solar array installed several years ago. Two commercial sites with solar arrays will be available for self-guided tours: the Harbor School and the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust.

Artisan Electric has been installing solar arrays on Vashon since 2007 and has seen interest in solar power increase significantly, according to Sarah Flynn, a company spokeswoman.

The goal of the tour, she said, is increase awareness of solar and to show that it is not intimidating to install or operate.

“It’s doable,” Flynn said. “It can also be pretty.”

The tour is free; to request a map to the solar tour sites, email info@artisanelectric.com. The tour will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
