Snow, lower than normal temperatures come to Vashon

The National Weather Service said temperatures would be “unseasonably cold” throughout the week.

Earlier this week, Vashon and Maury islands were blanketed in snow, and temperatures dipped lower than typically experienced at this time of year.

On Monday, Dec. 27, the National Weather Service released a special weather statement for Vashon regarding the deep freeze, warning that temperatures would remain unseasonably cold throughout much of the week, with highs in the mid-20s to mid-30s, and lows in the 20s.

At press time, the extended forecast for Vashon shows the possibility of more snow on Thursday, Dec. 30, and Friday, Dec. 31.

Despite the chilly conditions, children took to the berms in Ober Park on the afternoon of Monday, Dec. 27 to go sledding, and intrepid hikers also grabbed the chance to traverse the island’s newly snow-dusted landscapes.

On Tuesday, road conditions on the island remained hazardous, with King County Metro canceling bus service on the island as part of the activation of its Emergency Snow Network on Monday. Metro will continue to assess road conditions to determine if they can operate the full transit network.

The Vashon Library will be open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to provide a daytime warming shelter for islanders who may need it.

Interfaith Council to Prevent Homelessness is also providing assistance to those who need emergency shelter and can be reached at 206-643-5169. Individuals can also dial 211 for assistance in accessing emergency overnight shelters.
