A small airplane flipped after an aborted takeoff at the Vashon Municipal Airport Saturday morning. No one was seriously injured, although one of the passengers was taken to the hospital, according to Phil McClure, a commissioner for the airport.

The Cessna 182 was carrying two adults and two teens when the pilot decided to abort his take-off attempt, McClure said. When he brought the plane back down, the front wheel snapped off and the nose of the airplane dug into the ground, causing the plane to flip, he said. The plane was still on the runway when the accident occurred.

McClure said the pilot was an Islander but declined to release his name. The Federal Aviation Administration, however, released the plane’s registration number; the 1968 single-engine aircraft, it turned out, was owned by Islander Sjardo Steneker.

The plane was badly damaged, but none of the passengers seemed injured, said McClure, who was in his hangar when the accident took place.

“When I saw (the passengers), they were all standing,” he said.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the accident, although no one from the FAA or NTSB came out to the scene. “They allowed us to clear the runway,” McClure said.

This is the first accident at the small airport in years, he said. He could not recall the date of the last accident, though he said that one, too, was an aborted take off.
