The Vashon Senior Center on Friday afternoon will be filled with the iconic voices of musical legends Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Tony Bennett, Bing Crosby and Nat King Cole as islanders sing along to classic musical tunes.
The event, organized and led by islander Liz Shepherd, is dubbed the Golden Era Sing-along and is free and open to anyone who enjoys musicals and the famous songs from them. Shepherd will be coming with a full collection of songs from different musicals and playing them to hum or sing along to.
“Everyone will know all the songs,” she said Monday. “But it’s a surprise exactly which ones we’ll be playing.”
She said the event is a fun and relaxing way to celebrate musicals and movies. Friday’s event will be the third of its kind that Shepherd has organized. She started the sing-alongs at Edmonds Center for the Arts after it started a campaign for dementia-friendly activities.
“It’s great for seniors because they remember all of these (songs). They get carved into your brain,” she said.
After Edmonds, she took the program to the Merrill Gardens Retirement Community on Seattle’s First Hill.
“It was really fun. I thought it should be a thing at all senior centers,” she said.
Friday’s event will begin at 1 p.m. at the Senior Center on Bank Road.
“You don’t have to have dementia to enjoy it,” she said with a laugh. “It’s good for anybody who loves movie musicals.”
