A 51-year-old man considered to be suicidal in possession of a rifle was safely taken into custody on the evening of Dec. 9 after surrendering to authorities in the Gold Beach neighborhood of Maury Island, according to King County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Ryan Abbott.
The man had fired several shots into the air prior to the arrival of authorities onto the scene. He was eventually convinced to leave his rifle inside his home and walked out on his own volition.
“This incident really showcased an amazing job by deputies on [the] scene as well as our crisis negotiation team, to talk the subject into coming out of the house without his rifle and peacefully surrendering to police,” Abbott wrote in a later email.
A shelter in place order for neighboring households was lifted in the vicinity after nearly an hour and an all-clear was given. The situation ended without incident.
