The man implicated in a home burglary and the theft of several students’ bags from the Jensen Point boathouse last September has been charged with the crimes.

Sean Jeardoe, 20, was charged in King County Superior Court at the end of November with residential burglary, theft of a firearm and burglary in the second degree.

A preliminary hearing has been set for Dec. 18.

Jeardoe has been in the King County Jail since Sept. 11, when deputies apprehended him off-island with several items islanders had reported stolen two days before. A Vashon man whose daughter’s cell phone was among the items stolen had tracked the phone, leading to Jeardoe’s arrest in White Center. He was charged then with 10 felonies that stemmed from incidents that had taken place off-island between Jan. 26 and July 7.

In all, authorities have charged Jeardoe with 13 felony counts, and his bail, originally set at $75,000, was increased to $275,000 in October. The state requested the increase, citing public safety concerns if he were to be released and the possibility he would be a flight risk, as his history includes several court dates for which he did not appear.

Charging papers indicate that when Jeardoe was apprehended, he was wearing the firearm he had stolen from the home of Gene and Janet Kuhns on Vashon and was carrying stolen magazines and ammunition as well. Two additional stolen guns were found in the car he was driving, which he is also believed to have stolen. In his pocket, Jeardoe had a small container filled with jewelry. A woman with him, identified as his pregnant girlfriend, was wearing several necklaces and rings that he also admitted to having stolen.

After his arrest, Jeardoe told authorities he drove to Vashon with his girlfriend on Sept. 9 and entered the Kuhns’ residence on Cedarhurst Road by removing a screen from a window. There, the papers say, he stole jewelry and a safe, which he believed contained a gun. He said his girlfriend did not assist him at the home.

Following that theft on the north end, Jeardoe said he and his companion went to Burton, where they stopped at the boathouse looking for a restroom. There he spotted many sports bags and backpacks, and he took several. He reported that he dumped some of their contents into a Dumpster in White Center, but he retained much of what he had stolen, and those items were returned to the Kuhns and the junior crew members, who had been practicing on the water at the time of the theft.

Jeardoe also admitted that the day after the Vashon thefts, he committed residential burglaries in Fall City and Issaquah, where he traveled with the stolen vehicle and, according to eye witnesses, had the stolen gun from Vashon on the passenger seat.

If convicted, court documents indicate Jeardoe would face considerable jail time, as the standard sentence for the theft of a firearm alone is 77 to 102 months.

Jeardoe’s girlfriend was not charged with any crimes.
