School board incumbents trounced in Tuesday’s election

Vashon Island’s school board will look very different next year as a result of Tuesday’s election.

All three of the incumbents on the board that oversees the Vashon Island School District lost their seats by wide margins, a move that suggests voters were unhappy with some of the recent controversies that have beset the district.

With 100 percent of the votes recorded, Susan Lofland, the board chair, lost to Dan Chasan, a former school board member, 65 to 35 percent; Gene Lipitz lost to Kathy Jones, 64 to 36 percent; and Jake Jacobovitch lost to Laura Wishik, 60 to 40 percent.

“Clearly we want a new school board,” said Islander May Gerstle, who pays close attention to Island politics. “The numbers were clear, even though the incumbents who were defeated were very good school board members. They’re not dumb. They’re not incompetent They’re good people. … Yet they were trounced.”

In other election news, Neal Philip handily defeated Craig Harmeling in the race for an open seat on the fire commission, which oversees Vashon Island Fire & Rescue. Philip, a Seattle lawyer, garnered 64 percent of the vote to Harmeling’s 36 percent.

A full story on the election results will appear in the Nov. 14 issue of The Beachcomber.
