Scene and Heard: Gingerbread artists sweeten up VCA

Vashonites sweetened up the art center’s lobby with more than a dozen handcrafted works of gingerbread art.

The votes are in for the fourth annual gingerbread house contest presented by Vashon Center for the Arts (VCA).

Vashonites sweetened up VCA’s lobby this December with more than a dozen handcrafted works of gingerbread art.

The creations varied from the Point Robison Lighthouse to the island itself, and even one depicting Santa Claus boarding the ferry. (His sleigh’s license plate: L84FRRY.)

Community members submitted 14 of the confection creations, and more than 200 islanders cast votes from Nov. 30 until Dec. 23. The event was sponsored by Vashon Thriftway.

All entries were required to be 100% edible.

The winners were:

  • Best in Show: Vashon Fishing Lodge by Russell Dorr
  • Best Youth Design: Mushroom House by Catherine Graeb
  • Best Vashon Landmark: Island Time by Miriam Cressman
  • Most Traditional: Marshmallow Manor by Mia Doyle

“We are very grateful to all the participants and viewers who are helping this annual tradition grow,” Crissy Baker, performing arts event manager at VCA, wrote in an email. “And we would especially like to thank our sponsors at Thriftway.”
