A small sailboat overturned near the north end on Saturday morning, prompting a swift rescue effort on three fronts. WA state ferries, Vashon Island Fire & Rescue and the Coast Guard were all on scene as the single occupant of the vessel was found hanging on to its exposed hull. The individual was transported to Fauntleroy where West Seattle first responders were waiting to assess his condition.
He was found to be injury free and in good condition, which according to the Coast Guard’s Lt. j.g. Justin Brooks, sector Puget Sound Watchstander, was likely because he had taken the safety precautions of wearing both a wetsuit and a life jacket.
The boat was towed back to the Vashon ferry dock where the owner planned to recover it.
