Revamped Relay for Life to be held at Agren Park

Vashon’s Relay for Life will look different this year, with organizers hoping to attract more people to the fundraising event.

Vashon has hosted the Relay for Life, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, since 2009. In some recent years, however,  turnout has been low, possibly because the event was all night long and team members were asked to camp out at the Vashon High School track, said Jenni Nadler, a community manager for Relay for Life.

This year the event will be held during the daytime hours at Agren Park. Local organizers have planned a variety of activities to appeal to all ages, including musical performances, croquet and bocce ball, yoga, games and a food truck.

“It will be more like a community festival,” Nadler said.

The event will still include an event for cancer survivors and caregivers as well as a ceremony honoring those who have died from cancer.

As of Monday, there were 15 teams and 83 participants signed up for the fundraiser, which Nadler said was already more than last year. Islanders are also encouraged to drop by at any time during the day, Nadler said, whether or not they are able to donate.

“We wanted something that will revitalize it and bring people back into the effort,” she said.

The Relay for Life will take place from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at Agren Park. For more information and an event schedule, see vashonrelay.org.
