Rep. Jayapal staff to help with federal agency issues

A staff member from Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s office will be on the island this week to assist those who have had or are having issues in dealing with federal agencies.

Caseworkers from her office can generally be of assistance on any issue involving a federal agency, her spokesman Ansel Herz said. Examples include veteran’s benefits, visa or immigration documents that are stalled, difficulty obtaining a tax return, or problems with Social Security benefits. Herz added that members of her staff can also act as a resource on other issues and at least connect constituents to those who can help. He noted that in one circumstance, caseworkers assisted someone who was being erroneously charged out-of-state tuition by a public college, ultimately leading to a significant refund.

Constituents do not need to bring anything special, he said, noting that what is most important is connecting with the office and filling out a privacy waiver to get the process going.

Jayapal made a return trip to the island on Tuesday for a town hall — after press time — and Ansel said the office offers constituent services in conjunction with all its town halls.

Services, free and open to everyone, are slated for 1 p.m. Friday at the Vashon Senior Center on Bank Road.
