The Red Bicycle Bistro and Sushi shut its doors on New Year’s Day at 2 a.m., the restaurant’s manager told The Beachcomber before press time earlier this week.
Despite expecting to close earlier in the month, Garam Choi, the manager, told the newspaper that the first day of 2020 really was the final day for business at the island restaurant.
“That is the very, very last day,” Choi said. “That’s as long as I can push it for.”
When asked if there was any plan for re-opening or an imminent sale of the business, which has been listed for sale for several months, Choi declined to comment further on the future of the business.
“I don’t know — it is for sale, but there is no buyer who has already put a down payment on it,” Choi said. “So, for now, the course of action is to close it down.”
On Dec. 7, the Red Bike posted a thank you note on their facebook page and in the restaurant stating that they would be closing their doors shortly and invited the community to help finish the kegs and thank the staff.
The next day, a new note that stated the business would remain open — with thanks to the community for their overwhelming support — was posted.
“It has been a roller coaster of emotions,” Choi said.
The restaurant was closed over the week of Christmas and re-opened Dec. 29.
Choi is thankful for the continued support of the community and is looking forward to taking some much needed time off.
“It’s very bittersweet,” she said.
The Red Bike first opened in 2008.
