Primary show tailwinds for incumbent Vashon legislators

Results from the August 6 primary show unsurprising tailwinds for incumbent Vashon legislators.

Democrat Reps. Emily Alvarado and Joe Fitzgibbon have picked up more than 85% of the vote to continue representing the 34th Legislative District, a deep-blue part of the state that includes Vashon-Maury Island.

The primary election narrows each race down to the top two candidates, which will determine who voters ultimately pick for the jobs in November.

The following results aren’t final, but the winners of each race are unlikely to change. The last few ballots will continue to be counted by elections offices, and the August primary will be certified by August 23.

34th State Legislative District

As of Monday evening, the incumbent state representatives for Legislative District 34 — which includes Vashon and West Seattle — had a comfortable lion’s share of the vote.

Rep. Emily Alvarado (D) had received 86.6% of the vote to Republican challenger Kimberly Cloud’s 13%. Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon (D) had received 85.3% of the vote to Republican challenger Jolie Lansdowne’s 14.5%.

In both races, there was no other challenger nor a concerted write-in candidate effort. The primary, thus, confirms the obvious — that the incumbents and their challengers will be the choices for voters in the November general election.

Sen. Joe Nguyen’s seat is not up for election this year.

7th Congressional District

As of Monday, incumbent U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal led with 79.9% of the vote.

Republican challenger Dan Alexander had received 7.8%, just ahead of Democrat challenger Liz Hallock (7.7%). Republican Cliff Moon trailed with 4.6%.

Other races

In the crowded race for U.S. Senator, incumbent Democrat Maria Cantwell led with 57.5%. “GOP Party” candidate Dr. Raul Garcia will challenge her, taking second with 22% of the vote. Nine other candidates trailed with 6% of the vote or less each.

In the race for Governor, Democrat Bob Ferguson led with 45.2%, followed by Republican Dave Reichert’s 27.4%.

The Secretary of State race will be between incumbent Steve Hobbs, who led with 48.7%, and Republican challenger Dale Whitaker (36.5%).

In the race for Attorney General, Republican Pete Serrano led with 41.8%. However, the remainder of the vote was split between two Democrats — second-place finisher Nick Brown (35.5%) and Manka Dhingra (22.6%) — meaning Brown will likely head into the general with an advantage against Serrano assuming most Dhingra voters come to his side.
