The Vashon Park District board will discuss its upcoming levy election, including how much money to ask for and when to put its proposal on the ballot, at a special Aug. 4 meeting.

The governmental entity is fully funded by the maintenance and operations levy. The current four-year levy cycle, which expires next year, taxes Vashon property owners 45 cents per $1,000 of assessed home value.

Executive director Wendy Braicks said the board is weighing whether to put forth a levy proposal of the same rate or a rate of 50 cents per $1,000.

The park district’s levy brought in a little more than $1 million this year, funding maintenance and operations of the district as well as a few capital projects.

If the district taxed property owners 45 cents, it would likely get about $1.3 million annually, Braicks said. At 50 cents, the district could have an annual budget of $1.49 million. But Braicks noted that property values are in flux — when values fall, so does the amount the district collects.

The board aims to place the levy proposal on the November ballot. The board meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, in Ober Park.
