After an hour-long discussion that led to a handful of agreements last week, King County said it would remove its stop-work order at the Vashon Park District’s fields expansion project.

The park district pledged to revegetate the area where its crews cleared beyond the boundaries of its permit and supply additional information to the county, said John Starbard, director of the county’s Department of Development and Environmental Services.

DDES, meanwhile, will not slow down the project with additional reviews, ensuring that the park district can maintain its construction schedule.

The meeting, Starbard said, “was constructive and focused on resolving issues that were raised. The park district seems very willing to work with us.”

Starbard, however, said he still does not know how the project got so far along without triggering DDES’s normal review process.

“I’m still not at the bottom of how we got into this position,” he said.

The park district was issued a stop-work order on April 1 after a citizen complained to DDES about the extent of the district’s clearing, which extended slightly beyond its permitted area on the northeast corner of the property next to The Harbor School. After reviewing the situation, the county found it had yet to receive all the documentation needed for the project.

But Starbard said he’s confident the park district is now on track and the two agencies are working cooperatively. “We think we can keep the district on its construction schedule,” he added.
