A humpback whale, a rare visitor to central Puget Sound, has been spotted several times off the shores of Vashon since its arrival on May 12, according to Anne Stateler with the Vashon Hydrophone Project.
Any Islander who will complete third or fourth grade this school year is eligible for two weeks of swim lessons for free at the Vashon public pool this summer, thanks to a program called Make A Splash that King County and Vashon Park District have agreed to fully fund this year.
Some of Puget Sound’s lowest tides in years will occur today and tomorrow, meteorologists say.

A world exists beneath the waves of Puget Sound, a world of colorful invertebrates, elusive fish and an intricate ecosystem that few Islanders have the pleasure to experience.
Larry Flynn lives on a back road, but he’s a strong presence on Vashon. His small green house, surrounded by native woods and cultivated gardens, overlooks Puget Sound. There’s a walking trail down the steep bank to a beach below, where an osprey lands as we talk. Flynn explains that he inherited the house from his friend John Thompson, who died almost 20 years ago of AIDS.
When he’s a senior next year, Chris Carter noted, many of his classmates will be old enough to help determine the next president of the country or tote a gun in Iraq. But if a proposal put forward by Vashon High School’s administration is approved by the school board, neither he nor his friends will be able to leave campus for a sandwich at Subway.
There’s little question but that James McCrackyn, a 7-year-old Island boy, loves dogs.
Paul Wallrof, coach of Vashon Pirates Youth Football, is running for mayor of Vashon this year, and he’s got some creative campaign strategies.
He has rallied the support of Vashon Pizza and The Rock Island Pub & Pizza, which are selling a “Big Wally Pizza,” and with each sale will donate $1 to Wallrof’s campaign. Zoomies has added a “Big Wally Burger” to its menu, and whenever anyone orders it, Zoomies too will donate $1 to Wallrof’s run for mayor.

Four Jamaican students, who hosted Vashon High School (VHS) students in Jamaica this February will have the chance to explore Vashon Island next February.
This winter, four VHS students traveled to Jamaica with counselor Shirley Ferris, winner of the 2006 Doors of Opportunity Award.
The four Island students were paired with four Jamaican high schoolers who served as hosts during their visit. Now, the Jamaican host students are preparing for a visit of their own to Vashon next winter.
