The Vashon Farmers Market will be open in the Village Green from 2 to 6 p.m. today, Sept. 3. Farmers will sell Island-grown fruits and vegetables, including fresh corn, tomatoes, salad mix, sweet peppers, basil, pumpkins and more. There will also be fresh flower bouquets.

Opponents of Glacier Northwest’s plans to expand its mining operation on Maury Island are gathering signatures in an effort to dissuade Public Lands Commissioner Doug Sutherland from granting the mining giant a lease to state-owned tidelands at the site.
Just before 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 28, a pickup truck and trailer slammed into a dumpster, a small tractor and a guardrail at Vashon’s north-end ferry dock, knocking the tractor into the water and reducing service at the terminal from two ferry slips to one for four hours.
For months, opponents of Glacier Northwest’s massive sand and gravel mine on Maury Island have insisted the state owns the mineral rights to that sand and gravel and can’t hand them over to a corporation without receiving compensation.
The Vashon Road Crew, a group of Island walkers, held a dress-up, potluck dinner to celebrate the first anniversary of the establishment of “United Walkers’ Way” — a fund to which they contribute and which will benefit Island human-need-based nonprofit organizations.
I’ve read that Buster Keaton’s stated goal was to get the audience to laugh, which is no small undertaking.
