Open house set for new affordable home site

Vashon Household will host an open house celebration for its new affordable home ownership project this weekend.

Vashon Household will host an open house celebration for its new affordable home ownership project this weekend.

Called Sunflower, the project has been in the works for more than a decade and is finally coming to fruition with 14 small homes for low-income homebuyers.

At the weekend festivities, Sen. Sharon Nelson will speak, guests can tour the property and enjoy music and food, according to Vashon Household Executive Director Chris Szala.

So far, seven of the foundations have been poured, with the remaining seven going in this week. That work required the full contingency budget of $100,000, Szala said, as 10 of the foundations had to be dug deeper than planned and sand brought in order to pour a good foundation. Framing will begin by July 1, he added, with new homes expected to be completed in December.

All 14 homes have buyers currently, but Szala encouraged anyone who might be interested in a home to contact the agency in case unexpected changes occur or to learn more about the project for the future.

A $2 million construction loan was finalized last week, Szala said, but the project is still $250,000 short of what the agency would like to have in hand.

The open house will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Bank Road and 95th Place. For more information, call 463-6454 or see vashonhousehold.org.
