A powerful windstorm blew into the region Saturday, downing trees throughout the island and knocking out power to 1,000 customers on Vashon and Maury.

High winds blew a large fir tree onto Vashon Highway just north of 204th Street, where a moving vehicle hit it. The tree struck at least one parked car and took down several power lines. Crews with the county roads division and Puget Sound Energy (PSE) worked for hours to clear the scene while traffic was rerouted. PSE didn’t open the highway until late Saturday night, said Jim Didricksen, Vashon’s roads supervisor.

“It’s just a huge transmission line, and they had to do a lot of special work to make it safe for everybody,” he said. Road crews also responded to a half-dozen other downed trees on Saturday, Didricksen said, including one that blocked the highway near the north end.

Part of a large cedar tree by the Vashon Park District offices at Ober Park fell onto the building. There was minimal damage, said VPD general manager Elaine Ott, but based on an arborist’s recommendation, the district will likely take down the rest of the tree, which has been used as the community Christmas tree in the past.

The storm caused 40 different outages on Vashon and Maury, knocking out power to about 1,000 homes and businesses, said PSE spokesman Ray Lane. Crews worked through the night and restored power to most homes by Sunday morning, Lane said, though a few were still reportedly without power on Sunday afternoon.
