Presbyterian church scholarship
The Vashon Presbyterian Church is now accepting applications for the Heindsmann Family Endowment Scholarship.
The scholarship is awarded to a deserving student based on financial need, academic promise and dependability. Applicants must have completed two or more years of higher education or be seeking special training or retraining. The scholarship is not available to graduating high school seniors.
Applications and reference forms can be obtained at the church, located at 17708 Vashon Highway SW, during office hours (Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to noon), and must be returned by April 30. Applicants can also request the form by calling 206-463-2010 and leaving a mailing address or e-mail address.
The selection will be announced in May.
Free student meals at Chautauqua
The Vashon School District recently passed the 30 percent threshold (30% or more of enrolled students meet federal eligibility requirements for free or reduced-price lunches) which allows the school to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students at Chautauqua Elementary School for the 2025-26 school year, the district announced last week. It will not need to requalify for an additional two years.
McMurray student serves as legislative page
Beni Mullen, a student at McMurray Middle School, served as a page the week of March 17-21 in the Washington State House of Representatives. Sponsored by State Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon, D-West Seattle, Beni is the child of Tony and Yuka Mullen of Vashon.
Pages’ responsibilities include presenting the flags, delivering messages to members on the House floor, and distributing materials throughout the Capitol campus. They help the Legislature operate while also receiving daily civics instruction, drafting their own bills, and participating in mock committee hearings.
Puyallup Tribe donates to Vashon groups
Two Vashon organizations are among those recently awarded money by the Puyallup Tribe of Indians.
Vashon HouseHold received a gift of $2,500, and the Vashon Maury Community Food Bank received $10,000, the tribe announced in late March.
The Puyallup Tribe Charity Trust Board and Puyallup Tribal Council awarded 54 local organizations a combined $693,043 during their March 24 celebration at the Emerald Queen Casino Events Center in Tacoma.
The donations are funded by casino revenue as part of an agreement with the state of Washington, and the Puyallup Tribe has donated more than $9 million to hundreds of local organizations through its Charity Trust Board since 2020.
