Islanders invited to help plan Vashon’s future
King County officials will work with islanders to update Vashon’s town and community plans this year and will kick off the process with a meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 17, at McMurray Middle School.
King County’s Bradley Clark, who will facilitate the effort on Vashon, said there will be two main objectives to the meeting: introducing people to the Community Service Area plan and its expected time line and giving islanders a chance to recommend and comment on various plan topics.
The final plan, which will be developed in the coming months with islanders’ input, will help chart the course for the future of Vashon and is expected to cover a variety of issues and topics, ranging from demographics and climate change to zoning and major land use changes, as well as smaller, targeted issues that would affect residents within a defined area, especially the town core.
Heritage Association kicks off annual contest
The Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association is calling for submissions from island fourth and fifth graders for its annual history contest.
The theme of the contest is The Vashon Story, and there’s a chance to win $100. Any 9-, 10- or 11-year-old can enter; the entrants need to choose a topic that has a connection to Vashon and then create a story.
Presentations can be in a variety of formats: dance, poetry, essay, storyboard, video, etc.
For details and contest guidelines, see vashonhistory.org, or visit the History Museum at 10105 Bank Rd. between 1 and 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday for inspiration.
Submissions are due by Friday, April 8.
Donations sought for local diagnosed with cancer
Family and friends of Terri Colello are asking the public for support following Colello’s cancer diagnosis.
Islander Claudia Campbell said in a letter to The Beachcomber that Colello has been diagnosed with a very serious and rare form of cancer.
“Her volunteerism and involvement in many (Vashon Island School District) events is where I came to know Terri,” Campbell said in the letter. “Excitement, enthusiasm and planning are a part of her personality. She shared these traits with the many projects she worked on.”
Colello has two sons who graduated from Vashon High School and has been responsible for teaching elementary school children how to play chess, bringing the McMurray Labyrinth art installment to the middle school and overall “helping other students navigate their path to further education,” Campbell said.
“So many of you have asked what you can do. Please keep Terri and her family in your prayers, and send them positive energy,” Campbell’s letter stated.
A benevolent account has been set up at Chase Bank in Colello’s name.
