Last Thursday, a new sign manufactured by the island’s Meadow Creature water jet cutting company went up on the front lawn of Vashon High School. The project was paid for with funds from the school bond that passed in April. A total of $25,000 was set aside for the sign’s construction, but Meadow Creature owner Bob Powell said the full amount was not used.
“The sign was designed by me based on the VISD logo and using construction similar to other Meadow Creature work,” Powell, who has made a variety of metal signs that can be seen throughout the island, said Monday.
He said the sign fabrication was an effort of the entire shop crew — Lance, Stephen, Todd and himself — but all the welding was done by Stephen Cooper, a member of the VHS Class of 2010.
“I’m grateful for the Vashon school district reaching out to Meadow Creature to make a sign for the new high school,” Powell said. “In the shop we all enjoy this kind of project.”
The sign joins a growing list of projects completed with funds from the $9.9 million bond. Over the summer, a variety of projects were completed at all three island schools. At Chautauqua Elementary, new lights were installed at the covered playground behind the school and sound panels were hung in the gym. At McMurray Middle School, new carpet was installed in classrooms, the gym floor was refinished and new lights were installed in the gym. At the high school, the gym received a new coat of paint inside and out, new exterior doors and new paint on the floor. New bleacher seating caps were also been installed. Both the gym and building F also received new roofs.
