Following the departure of longtime Station Manager Susan McCabe late last year, Voice of Vashon has new leadership in place.
Lisa Breen became the executive director of Voice of Vashon on Jan. 1 and earlier this month said she is pleased to be on board.
“I am quite impressed,” she said. “It is an easy team to lead.”
Breen said McCabe reached out to her directly when VoV was interviewing to see if she would “interested in joining the queue.”
Breen said she jumped at the chance.
Before McCabe’s departure, VoV restructured, creating six volunteer-led teams.
Breen’s job is to oversee the teams, she said, making sure that they have everything they need, serve as a liaison to the board and fund raise for the nonprofit organization, which operates on about $120,000 per year.
Breen does not have broadcast experience, but she does not need it, she said, as the volunteers have considerable expertise in that area.
“It is an awesome job,” she added.
Breen has lived on Vashon for many years and has been involved with several volunteer organizations and their boards; she is currently serving on the board of the Vashon Community Scholarship Foundation. Previously, she worked at the school district for 10 years in special education and most recently she worked at Vashon Center for the Arts for two years.
VoV President Rick Reed said the organization was lucky to have Breen apply, even though they had several good candidates with a variety of experiences to choose from.
In the end, he said, the board unanimously chose Breen, noting that a priority for the board was someone with strong connections to the island.
“Lisa really had that, so people were glad to find her,” he said.
