The Diggers, a band made up of Islanders Camille Coldeen, Nick Simmons and David and Danny Salonen, will perform a free show at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 14, at Café Luna. There will also be a wine tasting with Vashon Winery’s owner Ron Irvine at the café that night, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Ainslie MacLeod will have a launch party for his new book, “The Transformation: Healing Your Past Lives to Realize Your Soul’s Potential,” at 7 p.m. Friday, May 14, at Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie. The party is a fundraiser for Kiva, an organization that provides microfinance for entrepreneurs in developing countries. MacLeod will also read from “The Transformation” and have a book signing at 7 p.m. Friday, May 21, at Vashon Bookshop. RiverBend, an Island band comprised of Dave Lang, Chuck Roehm, Mark Graham, Paul Colwell, Peter Larsen, Randy Bruce and Shelly Frankel, will play a free show at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at Café Luna. The group’s instrumentation includes guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, accordion, harmonica, autoharp and upright bass.

“Vashon Youth Conspiracy,” a music event masterminded by local guitarist and teacher Ken Jacobsen, will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 15. The show will feature Irish Wristwatch, General Way, Cade Roggenbuck, Vincenzo DeBlasi, Jackson Mills and guest performers. The music of Santana, Miles Davis, Link Wray, B.B. King, Ry Cooder, John Coltrane and other artists will be played. The event is free and for all ages.

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” a world-premiere dance by Dance! Vashon, will have peformances at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 21 and 22, and 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, May 22 and 23. The ballet, choreographed and conceived by Dance! Vashon director Cheryl Krown, will feature many of the familiar characters from the book and film versions of the story, as well as dancers playing the parts of gumdrops, Oompa Loompas, chocolate bars and a variety of other characters. Tickets ($12 for adults and $10 for those 18 and younger) are on sale now at Books by the Way or at the door.

Adria Pontious, a local photographer, will exhibit work at Spice Route Cuisine of India throughout May. The show is comprised of images Pontious gathered while traveling around the Sierra Nevadas and surrounding deserts while working as a spotted owl biologist for the Forest Service in Sequoia National Park.

Vashon Allied Arts’ 20th annual Garden Tour, featuring five local gardens as well as seminars and other special events, will take place Friday through Sunday, June 25 to 27. Tickets to the garden tour and seminars on Saturday and Sunday are on sale now at www.brownpapertickets.org, and cost $20 per person until May 31. After that, they are $25.
