A Great Blue Heron, coming in for a perfect landing atop a tall fir, was caught in flight by island photographer Jim Diers this week at Fern Cove.
Want to revel more in the winged life of Vashon? A number of upcoming events, presented by Vashon Audubon, are designed to dazzle the eyes and senses of a wide range of islanders.
First, mark your calendar for an upcoming Audubon talk by Peter Cavanagh, a Pacific Northwest wildlife photographer and author, which will take place at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, at the Land Trust Building.
The talk, “Birds in Flight: Photographs, Science and Stories,” will include photographs of birds from around the world and detail key aspects of the mechanics of bird flight.
Cavanagh has been taking photographs since he was a young boy, growing up in England. His accomplishments include images in the Audubon Society’s “Top 100 Bird Photographs of the Year,” guest-curating the exhibit “How Birds Fly” at the Seattle Museum of Flight, and exhibiting “Birds of the Pacific Northwest” at the Seattle Aquarium.
His book, “100 Flying Birds: A Photographer’s Notebook” will be for sale at the program.
Audubon also hosts bird walks every third Saturday of each month. Upcoming bird walks will be led by Steve Caldwell, Margie Morgan and Brendan McGarry. To find out more and register for the walks, which are limited to 12 participants, email sylvia@sylvansanctuary.com.
Vashon Audubon is also currently looking for islanders to put their boots on the ground in an effort to enhance wild bird habitats on the island, organized specifically to help the Vashon-Maury Island Land Trust care for a portion of the Judd Creek Preserve in Paradise Valley.
This habitat restoration project, already underway, will continue from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23 and Thursdays, March 2, 16, 23, and 30. Another work party will be held from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 11.
To join in, meet at the Judd Creek Loop Trail trailhead on the east side of 111th Ave SW in Paradise Valley (not the parking lot, on the west side of 111th close to 204th SW). Dress for the weather, including sturdy shoes. Please bring your own work gloves and hand tools, as well as water, snacks, and your sense of humor and purpose.
For more information on the work parties, contact Jim Evans at jimevans@centurytel.net.
