Someone broke into The Little House last week but apparently took only loose change, owner Bettie Edwards reported.

Edwards, who has owned the small gift shop for more than 30 years, said she came to work last Wednesday and didn’t notice anything missing until another coworker saw that a window in a back room had been broken.

Upon further investigation and with the help of a deputy from the King County Sheriff’s Office, Edwards discovered that someone had attempted to break open three other windows and that several items had been moved around in the store.

But apparently, the burglar was only looking for money, which she doesn’t keep in her shop after hours. Only some loose change in the cash register was taken, Edwards said.

“They didn’t take jewelry. They didn’t take wine. And they put everything back into place when they left,” Edwards said. The officer who investigated the break-in, Edwards said, “told me, ‘They must have liked you.'”

Edwards said she considers it a blessing that not more was taken and is glad she has developed the practice of never leaving cash in the store after hours.

She said her shop was burglarized three years ago, when, again, very little was taken. It was also broken into about 20 years ago, she said.

“We’re blessed to not have a major problem,” she said.
