A landslide has closed 103rd Ave. S.W. near the ferry dock parking lot. King County Roads Maintenance Manager Jeremy Ferguson examined the slide with Deputy Kurt Lysen and determined it would take at least four hours — until 6 p.m. or later — to clear. Road crews have arrived on the scene. While the slide is substantial for Vashon, Ferguson said it is considered a small, surface slide. He noted the island has had seven slides today at several different places, though the only roads that are closed are 103rd Avenue and Quartermaster Drive.
Ferguson was on his way to talk to ferry dock staff to create a plan for alternate travel until the road re-opens later today. Drivers who typically use 103rd should expect to be re-routed, including those on buses. Ferguson also noted the weather extremes from this week: freezing temperatures, warm temperatures, snow and heavy rain. Combined, they increase the risk of landslide, and more may develop.
