Two longtime John L. Scott brokers, Leslie Ferriel and Heidi Grimsley, are now the new owners of John L. Scott Vashon.
The pair of well-known island realtors announced their purchase of the business last week, saying they had partnered with Jason Fox and Joe Kiser, of The Madrona Group, in purchasing the business from its longtime owner, Ken Zaglin.
Ferriel and Grimsley also said they had also separately purchased the John L. Scott building on Vashon.
As the majority owners of the business, Ferriel and Grimsley will bring a combined 25 years of experience and hometown knowledge to their roles.
Both said they were pleased to be working with Fox and Kiser, whose company owns John L. Scott brokerages in Ballard, Bothell, Mukilteo and Westwood Village.
Ferriel, who until recently worked with Fox and Kiser in the Westwood Village office of their company, said she was thrilled to return to John L. Scott Vashon — her base for 15 years prior to her stint with the Madrona Group.
“I am so happy to be back home on Vashon with my crew that I worked with for most of my career,” she said.
For Grimsley, an agent with John L. Scott Vashon for the past seven years, becoming an owner of the company is a career milestone and a challenge she welcomes.
“I was born and raised on the island, and as a woman, I think it’s awesome for two women to own a business on Vashon,” she said, adding that the partnership meant even more to her because Ferriel had long been her good friend and colleague, as well as a mentor to her when she began her real estate practice.
Grimsley said one of her greatest strengths as a realtor was in client services, and that she also looked forward to supporting John L. Scott’s staff of agents.
“I’ve always been a cheerleader for my clients, and I’ll be a cheerleader for my agents now, too,” she said.
A key member of the staff, longtime managing broker Diane Stoffer, will remain in her role, Grimsley and Ferriel said.
“I feel very confident that the legacy that Ken has created will continue under the new ownership,” Stoffer said. “I’m excited to work with both Leslie and Heidi, and love the dudes at the Madrona Group — they are ethical, incredibly skilled, and also have a great sense of humor.”
She added that she feels great appreciation and respect for the office staff and her fellow colleagues, and believes that John L. Scott’s Vashon will thrive under the new ownership.
Both Grimsley and Ferriel credited Zaglin for his work over the years to build the company and support the community through charitable endeavors — a legacy they said they had been proud to participate in and will continue as the company’s new owners.
Zaglin, a fixture on the Vashon real estate market for 28 years, said he was leaving the business in capable hands, but that he wasn’t going far — he will, in fact, have a desk in the office and remain an active broker at John L. Scott Vashon.
Zaglin said that although he would be “kissing” the age of 68 this year, he wasn’t ready to retire, but rather, looked forward to simply continuing his real estate practice in a place he loved, without the pressure of owning the business and building.
“A few years down the line when I’m ready to put my feet up, I’ll be ready, but that songbird isn’t singing yet,” Zaglin said.
“I have always been committed to providing the best possible service to my clients and brokers, and I know the new owners share that same commitment,” he added. “They are insanely good human beings.”
