In recognition of World Suicide Prevention Day, islanders are invited to attend a candlelight gathering this evening in town or light a candle in their homes.
“We’ll light our candles in unity and stand together in a silent vigil,” said event organizer Theresa Hampl.
Since 2003, Sept. 10 has been marked as World Suicide Prevention Day.
Globally, more than 800,000 people die by suicide each year, which translates to one death every 40 seconds, according to the International Association for Suicide Prevention, one of the sponsors of this year’s initiative. This number exceeds those killed by war and homicides combined, making suicide a large global health problem.
On Vashon, the issue is particularly relevant, local organizers say, because of the high number of suicides the island has seen in recent years, including that of Kirsten Proffit, who died at the end of last month.
Additionally, last year, some leaders in the region responded to a spike in teen suicides in King County, calling it a serious public health issue. They also voiced concern about a small increase in suicides among young people on Vashon.
“It is time for our own community to stand together to help end suicide and make people aware of this problem,” Hampl said.
Hampl is one of many islanders interested in addressing the issue, and she said she expects tonight’s candlelight vigil will be the first of several events.
“This is a beginning,” she said. “Along with lighting a candle, we are lighting a spark to start a movement.”
Whether people gather in town or light a candle at home, it does not matter, Hampl added.
“This is a chance to begin the dialog and come together as a community and say enough is enough,” she said.
In town tonight islanders will gather in the parking lot of US Bank at 7:45, ready to light candles at 8 p.m.
