Several Islanders threw their hats into the political ring on Monday, the first day in the week-long filing period for elected posts in the region.
Island writer and lawyer Dan Chasan filed Monday to run for another term on the Vashon Island School Board. Two other positions that will be up for election in the fall had not garnered any candidates as of Monday, although the incumbents — Laura Wishik and Kathy Jones — are expected to seek re-election.
Joe Ulatoski, a retired U.S. Army brigadier general and a key player in VashonBePrepared, filed Monday to run for the seat vacated by Gayle Sommers on Vashon’s fire commission. And Ron Turner, an incumbent, opted to seek another term.
No candidates, meanwhile, had filed by Monday for other positions that will be up for election this fall. They include one spot on Water District 19’s board, three positions on the Vashon Park District’s board, three positions on Vashon’s municipal airport board and two positions on Vashon’s sewer district.
Candidates have until the close of business Friday to file for the posts, which will come before voters this fall. For more information, visit the county’s election department’s website at www.kingcounty.gov/elections.
